“ Up – Up and Away ” is the debut album by the American pop group 5th Dimension , recorded between April 1966 and March 11, 1967 in the studios of United Recording and Western Recorders, in Los Angeles/USA and released in May 67. The title track was released as a single and became a huge pop hit. The single released from this album, "Go Where You Wanna Go", was initially recorded by the Mamas & the Papas. 5th Dimension's version became a Top 20 hit in the US, reaching #16. Another release from the group, " Another Day, Another Heartache" also peaked at No. 45. But it was "Up – Up and Away" that launched the group and the song's writer, Jimmy Webb, into stardom. The group and the song racked up a total of five different Grammy Awards between them in 1967. The group appeared on many television shows of the time, including The Hollywood Palace, Shebang and particularly The Ed Sullivan Show, where they became the host's favorites.
The 5th Dimension was an American vocal group originating from Los Angeles, California, whose repertoire included elements of pop music, R&B, soul, jazz and Broadway light opera. This blend was nicknamed "Champagne Soul". Winner of several Grammy awards, the band is best known for their work in the late 60s and early 70s, through songs such as "Up, Up and Away", "Stoned Soul Picnic", "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" (from the musical “Hair”), "Wedding Bell Blues", "One Less Bell to Answer", "(Last Night) I Didn't Get to Sleep at All" and "If I Could Reach You". The five original members of the group were Billy Davis, Jr., Florence LaRue, Marilyn McCoo, Lamonte McLemore and Ron Townson who were active between 1966 and 1975. The group remains active, but with only one of its five original members.
