Yardbirds – The Yardbirds (Roger the Engineer) (LP 1966)

“ Yardbirds ” (aka “Roger the Engineer”), is the only UK studio album and third US album by English rock band The Yardbirds . Recorded between April and June 1966 at the Advision studio in London/UK and released on July 15 of the same year, it contains only original material and is the only Yardbirds album to feature guitarist Jeff Beck on all tracks. It was produced by bassist Paul Samwell-Smith and manager Simon Napier-Bell. It is the band's only LP to appear on the UK Albums Chart, where it peaked at number 20. In the US, it peaked at number 52 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, becoming the band's highest-charting studio album in the US. The album's best-known song, "Over Under Sideways Down", was released as a single in May 1966, two months before the LP. This album is included in Robert Dimery's book, “1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die”. In 2012, the album ranked #350 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. This Yardbirds LP is semi-officially known as "Roger the Engineer."
The Yardbirds are an iconic British rock band, formed in London in 1963. Known for their exploration of Blues, R&B and Rock, the group consisted of Keith Relf on vocals and harmonica, Paul Samwell-Smith on bass, Chris Dreja on guitar rhythm and later bass when Samwell-Smith left the band, and Jim McCarty on drums. A defining feature of the band was its rotating lineup of legendary guitarists, beginning with Top Topham in 1963, followed by the eminent Eric Clapton (1963-1965), Jeff Beck (1965-1966) and, lastly, Jimmy Page (1966- 1968). When Eric Clapton left the band, replacement guitarist Jeff Beck opened the door to new, bolder sounds. The band notably influenced the development of the hard rock and psychedelic rock genres. In 1992, the group was included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Artists), consolidating their place in music history. The band continues to be a reference for rock music enthusiasts around the world, continuing to tour under the leadership of Jim McCarty with a constantly evolving lineup.
