Jeff Beck - Truth [1968]

Jeff Beck - Truth [1968]

Band: English
Producer: Mickie Most
Band Formation: Jeff Beck, and his little band: Rod Stewart, Micky Waller, Ronnie Wood, Nicky Hopkins, Keith Moon, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones.
Position on Billboard: 15th position

60's Hotel: After leaving the Yardbirds in 1966 and releasing a single in 1967, the brilliant guitarist Jeff Beck decided to embark on a solo career. As singing wasn't really his thing, he called a certain Rod Stewart to the microphone, a hoarse kid who came from a series of small bands. For bass, he recruited Ronnie Wood, brother of Art Wood, owner of the band that would reveal Jon Lord. The drumsticks went to Micky Waller, from John Mayall's Bluesbreakers.

Then, in 1968, he released Truth, an album that preceded Led Zeppelin's debut by four months. Beck, in fact, would accuse Jimmy Page of stealing his ideas, including covering Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me". As the two were completely immersed in the London music scene and played together for almost a year, it is more likely that they developed the style in parallel.

"Truth" opens with a killer version of "Shapes of Things", a hit by the Yardbirds themselves. So striking that most subsequent re-recordings refer to Beck's version, not the original. Another highlight is "Ol' Man River", an American song composed in 1927 for the musical Show Boat and which has been covered by countless artists over the decades.
The lyrics talk about the suffering of black people who worked along the Mississippi and the arrangement is simply sensational.

And it's impossible not to mention "Blues De Luxe", a long and delicious blues in which Stewart's voice shines alongside Beck's guitar and guest Nicky Hopkins' piano, omnipresent on rock records of the time.

In fact, the guests are a separate case. John Paul Jones, future bassist and keyboardist for Led Zeppelin, plays organ on "Ol' Man River", which also features the great Keith Moon playing timpani.

The version of the instrumental "Beck's Bolero" is the same as the one on the compact that the guitarist released the previous year, so it has a different lineup... Jones plays the bass, Moon the drums, Hopkins the piano and Jimmy Page on the 12-string guitar, with Beck soloing. The music, in fact, was another reason for the fight between the guitarists. It is credited solely to Page, but Beck says he also participated in its creation, contributing the riff. Perhaps in response, Page used the same riff in "How Many More Times", on Zeppelin's debut album.

Hey, you troublesome bunch... There's an obscure saying: "No one should put their finger in a God's of Guitar fight!!!".

Jeff Beck produced 'Truth' in two years, between '66 and '68, right after leaving the Yardbirds. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London, in several long sessions, with the various guests already mentioned. "There were too many stars for too few constellations."

Brian Hyland – Brian Hyland (LP 1970)

Brian Hyland – Brian Hyland (LP UNI Records – 73097, December 1970).
Producer – Del Shannon.
Genre : Pop/Rock.

“ Brian Hyland ” is the title of Brian Hyland 's tenth album , recorded at the Sound Factory studio, Hollywood, California/USA and released in December 1970 through the UNI Records label. Of the eleven songs, there are five co-compositions by Del Shannon and Brian Hyland. Larry William's version of "Slow Down" sounds nothing like the Beatles' theme. "You & Me" is another excellent original from the team of producers/performers. Hyland and Del Shannon play guitar alongside Russ Kunkel's drums, Leland Sklar's bass, and George Tipton's sweeping string arrangements, but most of all, it's their work together on the “rhythm and blues” tracks that is fantastic. . This album contains the hit “Gypsy Woman", a song that reached the charts at number 3, a song by Curtis Mayfield. The album is a true work of art, of musicality, highlighting Brian's sublime voice. From the LP we highlight in particular the theme “Gypsy Woman.” In 1970 the LP reached position No. 160 on the Billboard 200/USA.
Brian Hyland was born in Queens/New York, on November 12, 1943. He is an American singer who began his career in 1959. His first big hit was "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini" (Lee Pockriss and Paul Vance) . Another hit for Hyland was “Sealed With a Kiss”, from 1962. During his career, Brian released 20 albums. Hyland has been in business since 1959 to the present. More information about this excellent singer can already be found on this blog.

Etta James – Her Best: The Chess 50th Anniversary Collection

Jamesetta Hawkins (January 25, 1938 – January 20, 2012), known professionally as Etta James, was an American singer who performed in various genres, including gospel, blues, jazz, R'n'B, rock and roll, and soul. Starting her career in 1954, she gained fame with hits such as "The Wallflower", "At Last", "Tell Mama", "Something's Got a Hold on Me", and "I'd Rather Go Blind". She faced a number of personal problems, including heroin addiction, severe physical abuse, and incarceration, before making a musical comeback in the late 1980's with the album Seven Year Itch.

James's deep and earthy voice bridged the gap between rhythm and blues and rock and roll. She won six Grammy Awards and 17 Blues Music Awards. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and the Blues Hall of Fame in 2001. She also received a Grammy lifetime achievement award in 2003. Rolling Stone magazine ranked James number 22 on its list of the 100 Greatest Singers of All Time; she was also ranked number 62 on Rolling Stone's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Billboard's 2015 list of "The 35 Greatest R&B Artists Of All Time" also included James, whose "gutsy, take-no-prisoner vocals colorfully interpreted everything from blues and R&B/soul to rock n’roll, jazz and gospel."

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame called hers "one of the greatest voices of her century" and says she is "forever the matriarch of blues."

Carole King...Tapestry [Original Recording Remastered, Extra Tracks]

Carole King was one of the original Brill Building songwriters and with husband, and co-collaborator, Gerry Goffin, wrote some of the most memorable hits of the '60s. In 1971, she became more famous. That's the year Tapestry became one of the biggest-selling LPs of all time. It's easy to hear why--the music is loose, earthy, L.A. session-pop. King is casual, intimate, and tough; she covers all the emotional ground of the post-liberated woman with ease. She brings adult nuance to "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" and comes up with hits ("It's Too Late," "I Feel the Earth Move") whose white-soul realism and maturity put pop hits to shame. --Steve Tignor..(Amazon.com)
